A Selfish Memory

How to have a better memory, maybe.

Do you ever have trouble remembering things.
Do you forget little details about your day?
What you had for lunch? What color your socks are?

The Devcakes method for better memory will help you!

Why is it you think your brain forgets things?

Why it is your brain remembers stuff?

Answering these questions could help us uncover the secret to a better memory.

Your brain remembers things, so that you can use the information later for survival.
Evolutionarily speaking that is.

You remember what foods are safe to eat, which are poisonous, you remember what girls like to hear, and what they don't.

Your brain remembers things it thinks are useful.

But how does your brain know what is really useful?

By how you feel when the experience occurs!

If your heart rate is racing as you talk to the girl, the brain says to itself, wow whatever is going on is nerve racking; I better remember the right answer so that next time it won't be so scary!

Well your brain takes cues from how you feel and it decides how important the event is.

Your brain says (is this important)--> yes- I better remember or no-its ok to forget this.

So when you are eating lunch, you feel like the day is very normal and plain. Your brain says, oh that feeling of normalness and plainness. There’s no reason to remember normal and plain.

But you don't have to feel this way!

You can tell your brain, that every little facet of your life is important. And it will be kicked into “This is important I better remember” mode more often.

If you tell yourself that every little minute detail of your life is important, that it is significant, your brain will become more active in remembering.

But my life isn't that interesting or important. There’s nothing good to remember.

Blah, that’s phooey!

Everyone knows all those cliché, “you only have one life to live” slogans.

Well they are kind of true, probably.

But you should act like they are anyways. You really should feel like the minutest detail is important.

Because it is.

And even if it isn't, doing so will give you a better memory anyways!

And what’s wrong with pretending your life is important?

You should think that your life is very important. That every moment of it is a rare and once in a lifetime experience worth remembering.

They are.

But if you don't think so, at least pretend!

You don't have to start acting like a big-headed ego centric jerk.

And feel that your life is more important than anyone else’s.

Only that your life is incredibly important to you, and you should remember it.

Being a jerk is stupid anyways.

So remember your brain has a little "how important is this moment right now" module in it.

You need to turn that module on by telling yourself, by believing, by feeling, by knowing, that yes this moment is incredibly important.

This little module will fire up and away your better memory will go.

Here are some tips for helping you think in such a way.

You could pretend that you are on earth to gather up experiences for god. He has sent you to earth to see how you handle it. To see what it’s like. It’s important that you experience life pretty good for him. Every second counts.

You could become an existentialist. Existence, perception, momentary awareness. Get in the game already.

So get out there are remember that every detail of your life is significant. Your memory will improve just by feeling that way.
